A Tale Dark And Grimm by Adam Gidwitz

A Tale Dark and Grim

By Adam Gidwitz

I read this book last year and it is still the best book I have ever read.
A Tale Dark and Grimm is a story about Hansel and Gretel, two siblings who on their journey away from their horrible step mother meet hunters with arrows which have red tips. As well as a baker whose favourite meal is roast children with a side of potatoes and sorcerers with dark spells. But where are they going? Well I don't what to spoil it do I.
I recommend this book for people age 9 and above and definitely not for the people who will easily get frightened. This book has just the right amount of gruesomeness to make you almost stop reading but then its just to good to stop.
Warning: may disturb readers under 7 years of age and people who get easily scared!

Divergent

Divergent

Don't be fooled by it's dark and plain cover, Divergent is a dramatic, thrilling read, soon to be a major motion picture.

Divergent by Veronica Roth is the first book in the 3 book trilogy, following Beatrice Prior on her journey to survive. Beatrice Prior is in a society divided into 5 factions, Abnegation, Dauntless, Erudite, Amity and Candor and she is forced to choose one. After making a shocking choice Beatrice finds herself in a faction dedicated to bravery and courage. Making a new identity as Tris, she is to under go extreme initiation tests that will determine her life in her new faction.

I loved this book because it had lots of action, romance and tension. I had known nothing about it when I bought it so it was a brilliant surprise to be enthralled by this book. Veronica Roth has really gone to extreme meausures with the detail and suspense. I just could not put the book down.

I would recommend this book to an advanced reader as there is some parts that are a bit violent.

If you liked the Hunger Games, the Divergent trilogy will be a book you will love even more, as it is about the will of survival. The 3 series follows through each other book, unlocking hidden discoveries and secrets.

My Sister The Vampire (flying solo)

There are a series of these books, this one especially is about when the two twin sisters are separated (Ivy & Olivia). Ivy has taken a big step, and followed her grandparents' desire and go to Wallachia Academy in Transylvania while her sister Olivia is left in America alone. Ivy is struggling in her new school with their extremely strict rules. Olivia is going to have to dress up as her twin sister ( which is a vampire) for a rock concert. Before Ivy left for Transylvania she had entered a competition to go to her favourite rock band, but to receive the ticket you must answer three questions about the rock band. Olivia being a bunny (Human) does not know anything about this gothic band, until they pull her up on stage to dance and perform a song. Ivy just happens to be in a lot of trouble too. At her new school the boys and girls are separated by a deadly forest, the only time they get a glimpse of the boys, is in gardening class though they are separated by cacti. How is she going to speak to the special one she has her eye on, let alone survive school with the wicked principle....

This book is a hilarious book for children over the age of 9, it is definitely a comedy book.

Victory
Susan Cooper

Sam Robinson is a farm boy. Kidnapped and forced to work aboard HMS Victory, Lord Nelson's ship at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. At first Sam is terrified and seasick but in the rowdy, dangerous warship he transforms himself into a sailor.  He also fights in the fierce and bloody battle, the echoes of which reach through the years to touch Molly Jennings.

She is a modern, English girl forced to live with her new step-family in America, and she too is fighting against loss and loneliness.

The back of the book story outline says, "This extraordinary time shifting adventure tells the interwoven stories of Sam and Molly, linked by a mystery. Two lives joined forever by the touch of Nelson, one of the greatest sailors of all time."  This is a good summary of the book.

What I like about this is that it goes back and forth through time to tell one story. But it is about two people.
The thing that captured me is how they put the funeral of Nelson at the beginning then they go into the story.

The Witches by Roald Dahl

THE WITCHES

The Witches, is a bubbling book full of tricks and casting nasty spells over children! The grandmother and her grandson go out to try and wipe out the ugly looking creatures. However, the Grand High Witch has got other plans.
It is a gut wrenching story with lots of twists and turns. It explains how to identify a witch if you ever run into one. These witches have no hair, so they have to wear ugly looking wigs that give them painful scalp rash. They also have no toes, so they have to squeeze their square feet into their horrible looking shoes. They also wear gloves to cover their long wrinkly hands. Another feature is their peculiar sense of smell.
If you want to be quaking in your bed at night whilst up reading under a dim light, then I definitely recommend this book for you.
